Porta Fiorentina

This ancient structure dates back to the 15th century, when this gate was an integral part of Lari's system of defence. The town's fortifications began to be documented in 9th century. Towards the end of the 15th century, during the war between Pisa and Florence, Lari was well defended with solid walls, moats and artillery posts that enabled it to easily fend off attacks. The first image depicting these walls is from 1503, made by  Leonardo Da Vinci, who was here visiting the colline pisane (Pisan hills).
The plan of lower Valdarno created on that occasion and is kept at Windsor Castle. Lari is also represented in that document, even if only summarily.
