The sanctuary, built in the 16th century, has undergone numerous remodels throughout the years, the most consistent of which was in 1800 when two side aisles were added to the main body of the building. Other restoration and modernisation work was carried out in 1946 after damages resulting from WWII, and in 1963 the sanctuary was renovated one last time at the request of the archpriest Don Aurelio Veracini.
