In 1559 the people of Lari asked Duke Cosimo I to build the square for the market complete with covered arcades, a request which he granted. From that point on, almost without interruption, a market featuring various merchandise has been held here every Monday. The arcaded loggia was completed in 1565, crowned by the addition of the Medici coat of arms. In 1625 it was decorated with frescoes. Under Italy's fascist government, the "casa del fascio" was built above the loggia, which was used as the council chamber and the offices for direct taxation and the registrar.
