The church of San Niccolò in Sessana is documented as already in existence in the 13th century. Today, only the perimeter walls are standing, all that remains of the ancient Romanesque church which, according to tradition, is believed to have been annexed to an ospitale (a refuge for pilgrims, the poor and the sick) run by Augustinian Hermits. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the title and benefits were given to the current parish church of Casciana.
